I fell in love with Block Printing after visiting Jaipur a few years ago and set up my own studio in the back kitchen of my lovely home near Newbury, Hampshire. I carve my own blocks getting inspiration from the beautiful flora and fauna around me as well as animals and marine life. I also have a large selection of blocks I sourced from India. Having been a Primary School teacher specialising in Art for many years I now relish the opportunity to introduce you to this creative, mindful activity. Hello, I am Sophie and I came across the Indian Block Printing Company at an event in Kent and since then have been a 'frequent flyer' on their courses, finding it a way to slow down from a busy day to day life while coming home with a beautiful item personal to me.
I run small workshops from the Purbeck Artisan Yard in Wareham covering all aspects of block printing from introduction and beyond. I'm Karené and I will be your host for your Pattern & Print workshops. I am an artist and a photographer, a printmaker and a pattern addict! I create my own motifs with linocuts, but I also enjoy printing with wooden blocks. The process of handprinting is calming and meditative, and at the same time there's something really satisfying and exciting about gradually seeing a pattern grow on your fabric. My block printing journey began at the Creative Craft Show in Birmingham, when I found myself completely drawn in by the beautiful display at the Indian Block Printing Company stand. The intricate wooden blocks felt almost magnetic, I couldn’t resist taking home a starter kit. From the very first print, I was hooked. I fell in love with the rhythm of the process and the quiet magic of lifting a block to reveal a design beneath.
Now, as a certified tutor with the Indian Block Printing Company, I’m passionate about creating workshops that are warm, welcoming and full of encouragement.
