About Our Blocks
Our Indian wooden printing blocks are hand carved in Jaipur, India, as part of a Fairtrade project. They are made using a sustainable wood known as sheesham. Each design is carefully traced and carved by hand onto the wood.
The blocks are then soaked in mustard oil for several days. This traditional process helps to preserve the wood and makes it less absorbent, allowing the blocks to be used time and time again.
How to Use a Wooden Printing Block

All of our wooden printing blocks can be used to hand print your own fabric, paper, card and clay.

Printing on fabric: Use a fabric paint or other suitable medium to ensure your design is completely washable. Our fabric paints require heat setting with an iron to make them permanent.

Printing on paper & card: You can use a wide variety of paints. Ink pads aren't always wet enough to work well with wooden printing blocks, so we recommend using a paint such as acrylic.

To achieve a good print, use a square piece of sponge or a dabber to apply your paint, dye or other medium, and place a foam printing mat (or something soft) underneath the item you are printing.

Caring for Your Blocks
Our blocks are made to last you a lifetime of printing, but it's important to give them a little love and care between projects.

Wash new printing blocks before using them for the first time to remove any oils or dirt that may affect your printing. The white coating on the surface will begin to fade, allowing your printing block to hold the paint more effectively.

To clean your blocks between colours, simply wipe them with a dry rag to remove the colour before applying your next colour.

When you have finished printing, wash your wooden block under the tap with warm water and use a nail brush to gently scrub any remaining paint from the design.

Make sure your printing block is completely dry before packing it away.
